The language of flowers
I recently read about the history of gifting flowers and how it became popular to assign meanings to specific colors. Reportedly, this has been traced back to the 17th century when the king of Sweden learned the “language of flowers” while traveling to Persia and brought it back to Europe. This tradition of pairing specific meanings with different varieties continues to thrive. The most common symbol, especially during Valentine’s Day, is the rose and its representation of love. But not only are there many colors of roses, but there are many nuances associated with even this one flower and its hue.
This concept stewed as I designed this year’s collection. I prefer to make bold and colorful pieces this time of year simply because nature isn’t providing much variety. It’s dark and cold, and the landscape is generally gray. Let’s brighten things up!
That said, I wanted to create new options that spoke to the sentiments you share with your loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Whether it be love, appreciation, passion, admiration, desire, or care, I also tapped into this spectrum for inspiration.

What I now consider the prized jewel of my garden, this Charlie’s White plant only produces one or two blooms a year. This variety is the newest addition to my peony collection, thanks to another one of my Mom’s generous neighbors. I only got one bloom off my plant last year, but it was enough for me to study, document, and build a trusty prototype for my library. (Along with the many stems gifted over the years.) The striking yellow centers of these blooms add a bit of whimsy and cheer to any room, and I get a kick out of how they look with other, more studious blooms.

Bartzella Peonies

My Mom’s neighbor brought home a Bartzella Peony plant last spring and was kind enough to gift me with one of its very few blooms of the year. This type is highly sought for its unique bright yellow (with just a hint of red in the center), large double blooms. I brought my stem home, studied it, made lots of notes, and carefully copied its form and distinct color patterns before it wilted. Now that it’s part of this collection, you don’t have to wait a year (or years) to enjoy your own!
